I decided to build my first collection of end grain boards while working on other projects. I rarely devoted a day or even a session to these boards but added to their construction here and there, tinkering as ideas flowed. I’m quite pleased with how they came out as the different woods provided a wonderful array of patterns and colors.
The red ebiata has a lovely diamond pattern and deep red hue. The oil darkened the color a bit too much but the patterns still pop. The maple reminds of fields of wheat or a pan of freshly baked rolls. The cherry is not as impressive in its color as it is in its face grain but the whorls and patterns are still beguiling. The white oak is rustic, a rough canvas color and visual on a smooth board.
The chaos board was the most fun. Using scraps with little regard for alignment, straightness, or color scheme, the end result still has a pattern to its disorder. I love it.
