I’ve approached woodworking much like I have done cooking in the past. I identify a technique and then embark on a brief phase where I focus on projects using that technique until I am comfortable enough to include it in my bag of skills. These boxes, both given as gifts, as well as the coasters from a previous post, are fruits of my labors learning to create box joints.
The olive box was more elaborate in its design; while it has its share of small “signs of character,” the color and the figuring of the olive wood are transcendent. The cherry and purpleheart box was built to house more gifts but ended up quite pleasing in its own right. The combination of cherry and purpleheart is one of my favorites.
