I decided to replace my nightstand, unhappy with artificial look and odd configuration of my previous one. I designed this cherry piece with a slightly different approach to the drawer. I bound solid pieces of cherry and oak with lock-rabbet joints, unlike my previous drawers which were plywood with solid fronts, and I used wooden guides instead of metal slides. A wooden drawer pull adds to a feeling of homeliness and comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The top was originally meant to be a solid panel but I somehow managed to unsalvageably bow it during glue-up. The pivot to a plywood top worked out well even with a few minor errors that prevented perfection. The finish, as always, is transcendent. It is obvious that cherry has a hold on me unlike any other wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building this piece gave me great satisfaction, a pride in the creation of something beautiful and functional and complex. It also reminded me constantly of the respect due to the true masters of the craft. For as happy as I am with my work I know it pales against work of a professional with the attention to detail and deftness of execution that are currently beyond me. No bother: this allows me to appreciate my craft even more for its own merits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
